16 Section 2 Chicago Tribune, Friday, December 11, 1998 GRITT0N LANPHERE continued from preceding page OBITUARIES ALMANAC 'Tony' Kopecky, 90; banker loved to sing state Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka are among the politicians who sought him out to sing at family affairs. Kerner invited him to sing at his inaugural ball in Springfield. Mr. Kopecky directed the choirs at St. Edmund Church in Oak Park and St Mary Church in Riverside. Among his favorite songs were "Ave Maria" and "Danny Boy," said his son, Bob Kopecky. "Although he was a banker for some 40 years, singing was his big love," his son said. "He had a true talent. He rarely used a microphone. I've seen him get up for between 700 and 800 people and just sing." Part of Mr. Kopecky's charm as an entertainer came from his love of people and a good party. "He was very social," his son said. "Last year he went out for New Year's Eve and came in later than I did. He just loved to party, and he loved to talk to people and be with groups." Mr. Kopecky rarely missed a Sunday choir event and always willing to belt out a tune for, friends until his death. Just last week, he passed an examination to renew his driver's license, which tickled Mr. Kopecky, but: made some in his family just shake their heads. After all, his vision had begun to fail. But for Mr. Kopecky, that license was crucial. It was hts ticket to Sunday mass and another chance to keep singing. "I think that was one of the things that kept him going, what, he could do in spite of his age," his niece said. "Even if he didn't feel all that great, he never missed mass on Sunday." In addition to his son, Mf. Kopecky is survived by his wife, Ruth; two grandsons; and a great-granddaughter. Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Kuratko Funeral Home, 2500 S. Des Plaines North Riverside. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's, Church, 126 Herrick By Meg McSherry Breslin Tribune Staff Writer Anthony "Tony" Kopecky, 90, whose talent for singing made him a legend in his hometown of Riverside as well as among many prominent Chicago politicians and orchestra fans, died Tuesday at MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn. A native of the city's West Side, Mr. Kopecky sang in operettas at Harrison High School and later joined the University of Notre Dame Glee Club, performing for groups across the country. Mr. Kopecky was a handsome man of Czechoslovakian descent, with a suave stage presence. Friends and family said he had great potential for a professional career as a singer. As a young man, he sang at the Oriental Theater in the Loop with the Paul Asch Orchestra. Later, he crooned with the Wayne King Orchestra. "He wasn't just any old kind of singer," said his niece Marie Daly. "He just had a very beautiful quality to his voice. And the women fell all over him every time he sang. I think my aunt was the envy of the whole Czech community." But after college graduation, the stock market crashed and Mr. Kopecky gave up hope of a professional singing career to help save the bank his father had founded, the Lawndale National Bank on the West Side. With the help of former Chicago Mayor Anton Cer-mak a Kopecky family friend who made a personal plea to customers not to withdraw their money the bank stayed open. Mr. Kopecky spent 42 years with the bank before retiring in the early 1970s. Still, his heart remained with his music and he continued to sing for local churches and at weddings and funerals throughout the city. "I think he sang for half the funerals and weddings in Cook County and beyond," his niece said. Former Gov. Otto Kerner and John P. Veitch; ex-actor: guided film productions Donald D.
